Sheet music readers & devices

Which iPad should you buy for sheet music?

Three specs matter for music reading, and none of them are the processor: screen size, front camera, and Apple Pencil compatibility.

Screen size

The 12.9/13-inch models show a near-A4 page, or two smaller pages side by side — meaning fewer turns per piece. The 11-inch class is a genuine trade of readability for portability.

Front camera

If you plan to turn pages with blinks or head movements, a TrueDepth (Face ID) model uses ARKit depth tracking and stays reliable in dim stage light.

Apple Pencil

Any Pencil-compatible iPad gets full PencilKit annotation in StageMate, which is the feature that finally replaces the pencil on the stand.

Try it on your own scores

Import PDF scores, add annotations, build setlists and turn pages hands-free. StageMate is available for Apple devices and Android. Features, cloud services and Pro purchases differ by platform; check the current plan before buying.

Questions people ask

Is a base-model iPad enough?
For reading and annotation, yes. Gesture turning works, with slightly less low-light margin than TrueDepth models.
Do older iPads still work?
Generally yes for reading; check that the OS version is current enough for the app.
Cellular or Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi is fine — StageMate reads and turns offline.
